I got Cyberdefender, and it worked great as a free scanner with spyware and trojan removal. If it finds a virus, you need the upgrade, which I got since I liked the speed and user interface of the scanner. The Cyberdefender anti-virus works great, and the paid version I got also came with 24/7 computer help line. I found out Cyberdefender is a NASDAQ company and they have a great product.

Ive been enjoying my blog that I created on blogger. You could probably develop some kind of interactive blog if that is something you would be interested in. Maybe have a discussion board or something as part of your project.

Download and install Visual Basic Express Edition for free at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/expres... Visual Studio 2003 is absolute crap with Windows Vista. Almost nothing works in it. I would recommend using any of the Express Editions or Visual Studio 2005 with the AJAX extensions.

You could create interactive computer lessons.
You know, not liek the ones wwhere there's just a written tutorial, but one's that actually walk you through using the program or the language, and give you problems and ask you to solve them and tell you your errors...that would be pimp daddy....and we wouldn't need a computers & internet section on yahoo answers :]

As I work in education, I like websites where people can share teaching resources they have created.
However, there seem to be so many and all aimed at different levels of education. I would love to see one comprehensive, easy to navigate, easy to search website.

I think u Must go and get Net 2005, if u are a programmer and u are focusing on the .Net Technologies, then u must upgrade to 2005, .Net 2005 contains a lot of new features specially for Web Application.

I am in the middle of changing careers to. I am 37 and in a My SQL class right now and from what I am hearing this is the way to go. The is really good money in it and it is very widley used therfore easier to get employment. That is the route I suggest. It really doesn't seem to hard to learn either.

If you go to Guru.com and search for web projects with the keyword "php", you get 188 results (as of a few seconds ago), compared with 56 results for "asp".
If you learn one, and it becomes clear that the other is better, your knowledge will transfer.
Also note: you can use PHP and MySQL on windows (I recommend downloading WAMP at http://www.wampserver.com/en/ -- it stands for Windows Apache MySQL PHP, similar to LAMP, where L is for Linux).

there are thousands and thousands of us that don't have our own computer. we use computers at schools, kiosks, libraries etc.
this means all we can use for image manipulation is windows paint or something lame like http://www.myimager.com/ or http://www.gifworks.com/ that have extremely limited tools.
i would love to see a photoshop like java applet on the web. we now have java ftp clients like http://www.unlimitedftp.com/myftp (works as good as those you install) so why can't we have a decent FREE image editor?

1) You don't have to learn linux to know php.
2) Once you learn how to program and a bit about SQL, you can use that knowledge on almost any language.
3) My advice: just get the basics down first then you will be better prepared to make that decision yourself.
4) Most developers can utilize many languages.
5) SQL is used in many databases and often there are programming elements specific to each DB that are used with it. MySQL is only one example of a DB that uses SQL. SQL stands for Standard Query Language... emphasis on the word standard.
The link below is a quick easy windows install of several programs that will setup an environment on your machine where you can play with several languages and two ways of using MySQL.

C# is neat (even if it is just a hash between C and Java), but it's not really widely used in web publishing. You're best sticking with XHTML/Javascript (with maybe a tiny bit of Flash, but make sure you've got alternatives built into your site for those who haven't got the plugin if you use it), scripting languages like ASP/PHP and databases.
Shops are usually a top-scoring final year computing project. You don't need to get the framework for purchase sorted out, but providing a front end, a database interface, an admin/stock control system, concurrency control and a security system all together would make for an excellent demonstration of your skills.
Similarly, you might wish to try some sort of multi-user message board system (Yahoo Answers is a very good example of something you could do); possibly with some sort of complex scoring system or "Combat" system between users (a textual online multiplayer RPG, for example).
Mind you, there is always the "neat graphical gimmik" option since you know C#. If you can come up with some innovative algorithm for drawing visually impressive things on screen based on unusual input, you're set. I've met a guy whose project was to draw exportable landscapes in Java on the basis of a text-file input and the characters read in from the file. What's more, he then proceeded to pass all sorts of html pages into it from across the web, which was an awesome display.

I think the answer is: It depends.
Some open source developers make money selling consulting and customization services.
Others like Google provide their software for free in order to drive traffic to their own services and build loyalty.
Some open source developers offer one version as open source and a more fully functioning version for a price.

I think the answer is: It depends.
Some open source developers make money selling consulting and customization services.
Others like Google provide their software for free in order to drive traffic to their own services and build loyalty.
Some open source developers offer one version as open source and a more fully functioning version for a price.
Still others provide open source software without any hope of financial gain.

It depends on what kind of job you are looking for and the part of the country that you are in. The technologies are pretty comparable - and if you don't know anything about dynamic websites - learning one will definitely help you learn he other. Here's some advice:
1. Check out the job ads in your area to get a sense for what is in demand. If in the past 30 - 45 days you see 3 advertisements for PhP developers and 35 for ASP.NET - then you have your answer. Also - take a look at your industry and the salary levels for each. For example, in the D.C. area, a lot of government contractors know JSP instead of ASP.NET - so knowing JSP will open up a lot of doors for you. But if you want to work in non-profits, PhP is the way to go. Getting knowledge like this up front should help you to know where to focus.
2. Focus on learning the one that is significant demand but also for which there is not a huge supply of people (salary levels can tell you a lot.) Try to learn it thoroughly!
3. Once you learn one technology pretty well, the other one should come fairly easily. A few months before your job search, you can download the other one and learn enough to be able to truthfully say that you have a working knowledge of it. That way, although you focus on the one with the huge demand, you still have a little experience in the other. I'd be very honest about how much experience I have with it so that employers aren't annoyed when they find out that you have working knowledge - and are not an expert.
Here's a little advice for each type of technology:
ASP.NET: There are tons of good books out there to help you learn ASP.NET. Microsoft is really good with software training - you can usually get all kinds of free stuff and they have webcasts etc. online. Watch their site - sign up for webcasts, their microsoft road shows, and user groups. They are really pushing sharepoint (their content managment system) so it would be good to at least know what it is. From doing these things, I've gotten free books, software, and more. A lot of it is the developer's version, which is great for learning.
If you learn ASP.NET, you might want to try your hand at SQL Server too, which is the Microsoft's corresponding database. But just learning standard SQL is the best route - since once you know that - you can use it on just about any database, from Access to MySQL to SQL Server to Oracle. If you want to keep everything Microsoft, make sure to run your application on IIS - the microsoft webserver, which is very easy to learn how to administer. I'm not sure if IIS comes seprately - for XP I remembered getting it as part of the XP Professional operating system. Also, if you are looking to program (doing a lot of the business logic) - you'll probably want to look into learning VB.NET or C#.
PHP: If you decide to go with PhP, you can skip all of the messy configuration by downloading XAMPP (www.xampp.org). XAMPP will install Apache (web server), PhP, and MySQL for you. You control them through the XAMPP interface. Installation is a breeze - just remember that Apache runs on port 80 and if another application (such as Skype) is running on it, you'll need to shut down that application before Apache will start. There are tons of PhP tutorials out there and there are lots of open source PhP projects that you might be able to lend a hand to - to get experience. Something else that might be a feather in your cap if you are going this route is to try to learn how to work with a CMS (content management system) - like Joomla! or Drupal. They are free, PhP-based, and might give you an edge over the competition.
For Both: Again, try to learn plan SQL instead of worry about the different variants for MySQL or SQL Server. Plain SQL should help you no matter what database - you can learn their particular quirks later. If you are thinking front end - you might want to brush up on HTML, CSS, and Javascript since you'll still need these technologies. When you test, download a couple of browsers so that you can look at your site/application in several browsers while you are working (Firefox, IE, and maybe Netscape should do the trick). It will also give you a good feel for what works .... and what doesn't. Also learning a bit about graphic design (a good online tutorial) is a plus as well as having a rudimentary knowledge of XML - enough to do simple things like create a RSS feed. Another nice tool to have that is easy to learn - is learning how to set up a web log parser. There are lots of free ones out there like Wusage that will parse data for you. Knowing how to do simple things like this can add to your resume and help you to stand out.
There is a lot to learn in this field - but it is so much fun, and if you can wrap your hands around the basics, you'll be way ahead. Congratulations on choosing the field - I think you are going to have a blast, I know I did!

For the most part, developers of open source software have day jobs or work as freelancers apart from their open source projects.
Open source projects are community-driven. They have many contributors who take pieces or elements of a program and develop them in their spare time. It really is for the most part voluntary and with the idea of contributing to the greater good. There is a sense of bettering the computing experience for other people, who in turn develop other kinds of open source projects. Another upside is creating competition against the bigger companies and to spur innovation in general. So really, it is more about idealism than it is about income. Some do ask for contributions and donations, but that's simply for defraying costs rather than building profits. Plus open source development helps emerging developers build their experience. Think of it something like a club made of hobbyists. The popularity of a given open source application is usually the greatest reward some will ever see. And it can sometimes lead to a career in a more prestigious capacity as an employee for Google or Microsoft.
So, no. Open source developers don't make much or any money from their creations. It's more for fun, experience, community ideals and giving big corporations a run for their money.

Build a search engine spider that indexes Yahoo Answers. Then build a web interface to it to allow users to search for different items. Additionally, build a RSS feed off of it so that a person could put new questions in their rss reader. Its been done by Yahoo and Google but for a student that would be pretty good.
Finally, if you have time build out some web services that do all the above to allow others to mashup the services into other web sites/services/applications.

I changed jobs this year from being mainly a Java based software engineer to being totally a user interface engineer (JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, HTML, JSP). The dough is great (nearly six figures after expected bonus). I'm 50.
There are many people in the field - not so many good ones - few great ones. At 47, you should have better work habits and much more depth and breadth of business skills than the kiddies. Those a real pluses. However, I would expect you to need more than "a little HTML" and "6 months" of study. I've been doing these things for almost a decade.

I would definately be sure to keep a regular income until I could get web work on a steady basis. With that little experience I seriously doubt you will be able to find a job on the outside developing. A lot of the larger companies will not even consider your app if you are not a college grad or have several years exp in design and development. Most of the ones I have seen want you to be highly skilled multiple programming languages as well as CSS, (x)HTML, JavaScipt. I am only a few years younger then you and believe the larger companies also have a cutoff age of around 45 even if they will not admit it. I have been trying since December of last year and have more qualifications then you mentioned. I came to the conclusion the only way to survive for me is to start my own business up and sell websites that way.

Yeah the job market for web design is pretty saturated and is frankly not very well paid. There's opportunities there but you need to be able to prove you're the best out of the 100 or so other people that are applying for the same job.

i think it would be good for it to be safe if it was going to be available to younger kids. Not asking 4 last names and address and not allowing them to talk to other poeple unless they know them. But i would also have a board/wall type thing for older pople where they can talk 2 other people that they don't know but share the same intrests. it should have good graphics and have lots of games to play solo or with other people. it should be fun! hope this helps!

Anything is possible. I'm 47 and work primarily with ASP.NET. But I have a degree in computer information systems.
What kind of life experience you have may help. For example, if you were a plumber and you are going to develop a website for a plumbing supply house, that may be a benefit. But no one else would likely be seeking a plumber with 6 months of programming classes.
I'd say you need to delete experience from the equation by working with newer, cutting edge technologies that No One has much experience with. Take a look at Silverlight, which is Microsofts answer to flash and is only out in BETA until this fall. AJAX (asyncronous javascript and XML) is also drawing a lot of interest.
good luck

You just need to customise vbulletin. May be you can contact a coder for doing so. Check websites like http://askexpert.info/

This is really just a heavily modified bulletin board system.http://www.invisionfree.com is a good place to get a free starter board.http://www.phpbb.com is the biggest open-source BBS out there, and has lots of mods to help you accomplish what you want, including post ratings, moderation, a "cash" system that can allow better users to post more / view special sections / get more privledges, etc.

Companies don't release this information, that's why anything you find will be about 5 years old (and probably very inaccurate).
If I were to guess, I'd say it's probably close to 50/50 because .Net and Java both have their strengths.

This maybe a little overkill. But a lot of people are doing this type of thing with Joomla (see sources).
With the right customizations and plug-in this kind of thing should be possible. But it maybe overkill. I can't think of a simple sharing application in php/perl off the top of my head.
Joomla is however the most popular CMS out, so there should be lots of free available support to get you going with your endeavor.
Good luck.

Open Source is the trick to this question and to be honest I don't know of any off the top of my head, though if your looking for a virtual drive thats open source then I would guess you run in circles more knowledgeable then Yahoo! Answers. If your just looking for a free alternative then I'd suggest:
Daemon Tools Lite (Has only failed me twice, and those were tricky ISO's)***
UltraISO, good but not great
PowerISO, once again, good but not amazing
MagicDrive, I find this to be garbage due to crappy run times, errors loading and several other issues, but its free so can't really complain.
There are many, many pieces of crap out there when it comes to things like this. and the usually community that demands the product leads to most of the sources being riddled with viruses. Try Daemon Tools LITE not standard, LITE unless you know about things like ISOHunt or PirateBay, then go pro by all means (not that i encourage that sort of thing). Good luck.

There's a little-known open source utility that can be used to create and/or mount virtual CD/DVD/hard disk/floppy disk images:
It's called ImDisk, and it's at http://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html#ImD...
I've regularly used with an ISO file, and it works well for me. (Just remember to look for ImDisk in your Control Panel after installation--NOT your start menu programs!)
I hope this **open-source** suggestion works out well for you. (I'm the same way--if there's a FOSS alternative that works, why use that other junk?)
Best of luck to you.

I don't know of any open-source alternatives for Windows, but there is Alcohol 52% free edition.
In Linux, you don't need any additional software. Just use mount:
# mkdir -p /mnt/cdrom
# mount -o loop /path/to/file.iso /mnt/cdrom

There isn't a seperate "build exe" in .NET as there was in VB 6. Whenever
you build, your assembly and .exe are constructed. You should find it in
the BIN directory of your project on disk.

Which VB.net do you have? I have 2002 and 2005.
In 2005, you can make the .exe file by clicking on Build and selecting Build (name of solution). The .exe file will be located in the solution folder under the folders bin/Release. By default, it should be in the Visual Studio 2005 folder in My Documents, under ProjectsName of Solution bin Release.
In 2002, click Build... Build Solution. The .exe file should be in your solution folder directly under the bin folder.
I assume version 2003 is similar.
When I first switched from VB6 to .Net, I missed VB6 too. Things that I knew how to do in a matter of minutes now took an hour just to figure out. But once you get used to it, you'll never want to go back. Just give it some time. I'm just switching over to version 2005 and am starting to appreciate it. Unfortunately, I started a project a year ago in 2002 and it's just too much work to re-write, so I'm stuck using the older version for that one. If you want to take a look, it's a web application written entirely in .Net (with a little javascript here and there): http://www.imagolfer.com.
Hope this helps.

Either OpenOffice.org, as mentioned, which you can download at http://www.openoffice.org
Or you could try Gnumeric. It's not as feature-rich as OOo or Excel, but it does the trick.http://projects.gnome.org/gnumeric/downl...

Go to msdn.microsoft.com and download free versions of VB Express and/or C# Express. There are many resources there for learning; tutorials, videos, papers, etc. Look locally for a .Net user group and check out www.ineta.org.
Good luck and enjoy.

Do you think Apex or maybe Google Apps can help you? if you can't find any helpful classes in both of them then I suggest you not to use them
personally, I think PHP is as strong as ASP while ASP.NET is like the continuation of ASP so you might as well use ASP.NET as well
I'm also developing e-commerce application in ASP.NET (using VB.NET) and so far I think the application will be powerful enough (it's not completed yet though)
I'm suggesting you go with ASP.NET

Developing software using existing Open Sources saves time in starting a business and its cost effective too.
The only wring thing with open source is that they do not guarantee quality.. and for that purpose we need to customize it as per our requirement.

Personally, I took this route:
Flash
HTML
Actionscript
CSS
Javascript
PHP
MySQL
Apache & Linux
Java
I learned most of those concurrently, so it doesn't make much sense to put them in order. I don't seem to have much trouble finding work and am satisfied at the moment with my compensation, so I suppose I did something right.
I think the most important thing is to focus your energies into whatever language most interested you now. If you're truly interested in the language you're learning, you won't be able to put it down and you'll have the drive necessary to dominate the language.
Best of luck to you, whichever roads you choose.

Basically, you can using only ActionScript and HTML to make static (not interactive) web sites.
But to make dynamic (interactive) web sites, you must learn client-side scripting language such as JavaScript or VBScript (Visual Basic Script), and server-side scripting language such as ASP or PHP.
You may use ASP.NET to make more advanced web sites.
For learning web languages, you can use W3Schools website at http://www.w3schools.com, it is easy to learn.

Nope, not too old, but ASP.net isn't really a good way to go. With no experience, you can expect it to take around 2 years before you really get to grips with it. That, and ASP.net is awful. Whoever told you to do that was probably just giving you an off-the-cuff remark to get rid of you, a bit like "just learn rocket science tomorrow". I mean, the inital outlay is also tremendous! Youll need a computer and things like Visual Studio:http://www.memory-express.co.uk/index.as...
So for hardware & software you'll be looking at a good £1k. Books and courses will set you back another few k - especially as you'll need background courses - you can't just "jump in" to a 5-day ASP.net course and expect to understand it.http://www.traininghott.co.uk/
All in all, just to start out, you're looking at spending a good £5k.

as colo stated, OO makes "distributed" projects easier, you can each take a "chunk" of functionality, and produce the code for it.. You then bring all the code together in one place, compile, and you have a completed application.
a lot of effort must go on with the communication between the developers though. In order to communicate between components, interfaces must be designed and so on.
Places like SourceForge provide an excellent collaboration platform and repository for these styles of projects.

Hi,
Welcome to Dubai.IT industry is not as much as developed as India. But, u can expect a salary atleast 8000AED per month. But that even I am not sure considering the present scenerio.
Rest assure ,50% of your salary goes to housing. For example , 1BHK flat rent cost 90k pa in Dubai and 60k in Sharjah. If ur company provides u the accomodation, then its very good,
Food per month will cost you 1500 dhiram total provided that u cook at home.Since, ur job is onoffice job, transportation cost will be low.Taxis are available in abundance and buses also. They come cheap. For example, bus fare is fixed 2 dhiram for any route and distance.Buses are excellent.
Thanks,

they use an object-oriented approach. that is they work on parts that are independent of each other. they work on components assigned to them which when joined with all the other components from the other programmers completes their project

Since you have your career goal in mind, the next thing to consider is what your competition will be doing to get the same job you're after: a degree.
I'm not saying that you have to go get a bachelor's in computer science, but I would suggest an associates degree in computer science as minimum, if you are wanted a chance at any type of competitive job.
If I were in your shoes, I would:
1. Find another job - at least part time.
2. Apply to a community college that offers computer science or programming programs and certificates
3. Learn the basics of computer science and programming with a good starter language, such as Java.
4. Once you know the basics of computer science and programming, programming professionally will be a matter of simply learning the syntax for any language, or multiple languages, and applying the knowledge you've attained to your projects.
Good Luck.

i don't think they're forced to use OOP. they just need to talk to each other. also, you definitely need a central server for source control management, i.e. CVS or Subversion. (Sourceforge.net offers free CVS hosting for open source projects).
of course there will be some misunderstandings in the beginning, but that will sort out soon enough. the developers have to talk about the interfaces between their "parts" of the code, and then both of them can work more or less independently from each other.

The best place to look is on the UCAS website which is the organisation that you have to apply through to get into university in the UK if you want to study for an undergraduate degree.http://www.ucas.com/
If you follow the link above it will take you through to their site. The UCAS site will also provide some advice on finance etc. It's not really clear from your question if you live in the UK, want to come to the UK to study, or want to study by distance learning, but you are only likely to be eligible for finanical assistance if you study at a UK university in the UK (rather than by distance learning) and normally have to be a 'home fees' student, rather than someone who lives outside of the EU. A home fees student is someone who pays the rate charged to UK undergraduate students and peopele who come from other EU member states. If you live outside the EU it is much more expensive. Which country you come from will also affect your ability to get various types of financial assisatnec such as student loans.
By being an enrolled student that university would then give you careers advice. All UK university's have career services (of varying quality) but the advice is only available to you once you are enrolled student.
I would think most of the time a degree in Media would be a Bachelor of Arts rather than a Bachelor of Science, by the way.

Media Arts and animation differ slightly different, where Media Arts leans more to Mass Communication, whereas Animation students are based specifically in the film and games industry.
Look up the artists that are currently working for Konami etc, and find out which schools they went to. Two extremely good schools that give animation courses are Central St. Martin's, and Royal College of Art. An Animation course in your selected university would be a better bet for you to be a Concept Artist (CA), rather than in Media Arts (personal opinion).
But if you truly want to be in the centre of gaming culture in Japan; you should look up scholarships or internships that allow you to fly to Japan. Most foreigners that go to study in Japan usually take a Japanese language course for a year - to pass the national exam, before taking a Bachelor's degree there.
After finishing with your course, it would be wise to talk to your professors, for they may have contacts in the industry that can help you with your career.
Hope this information helps. Good luck!

If you are a open source programmer, you can still earn money by selling your software. The only thing is that you also have to give uour source code along with the software.
e.g. if you have the driver code for a USB device in linux, you can sell this code to different companies. The only thing is that if you are using any third party open source libraries, you should not make any changes to their code.
I have seen people who earn by developing open source softwares.

I've got this little 12-foot mud scow that needs to have some barnacles scraped off, but I guess that's not what you're talkin' 'bout?
And you know that 50% of new companies fail in the first 4 or 5 years?

Assembly language and machine code would be most useful. No diploma is necessary. These would be part of a computer science education.

You could write a program in a language like c++ and just compile it with a Windows compiler on the PC and an Apple compiler on the MAC

It doesn't matter, it's taken and they probably won't sell it.
It would appear that the marketing divisions of big companies don't find it very valuable at all. Names just as short and catchy like SilkMilk.com aren't even taken - they use silksoymilk.com. You would think it'd be important to them, but I don't think a lot of consumers visit the websites of their favorite soy companies...

Java. Both Macs and PCs has their own compiler to compile the same bytecode generated by Java. Though, I don't know if the same programs in Macs and PCs can talk to each other. It has been a while since I have done any coding.

What do you think "open source software" is?
It can be written in ANY language...
Linux is widely used "open source" OS platform, so C/C++ is useful for system development, but other than that, it does NOT matter...http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=open+so...

Good question Reya.
Sadly, the real answer is market share, not software quality or value. M$ is hyper-sensitive about its strangle hold on the market and goes to incredible extremes to keep it.
In Africa, for example, where Linux (esp. Ubuntu) is becoming popular, M$ practically gives away their OS. They create / donate entire computer centers in such nations.
It's altruism with a devious intent. <sigh>

Open Source is definitely taking over. But trust me friend it has a long way to go.
5 Years back if u can say u can install Linux u are considered as a Hardware Guru. The same days when every one installed windows very easily.
Open Source OS have improved a lot since then and now are as easy to install as windows.
But when you talk about in a Production Environment people prefer Microsoft because of the support available from Microsoft.
There are no open Source OS that offer the same level of support.
And the other reason is go with the wind. 90% of Computers are running Windows, so industry is following the trend.

Because the majority of people think of computers as appliances - the buy it, plug it in and use it. They don't think about things like the operating system, they just use what came on the computer because that's how it is. People also dislike change and having to learn new things. And while there has been publicity for open source software, it really doesn't reach the average user.

Its still worth while since the SOA happened a few years ago and .NET is one of the most suitable environments as SOA gets more popular.
I am not sure if I want to spend that much money for just getting myself updated on the technology though, as a PMP certified project Manager. Unless you want to be able to program (which I doubt). I would suggest that you start by reading a book and once done then see if you really want to spend that much money on further training after you finished that book. It will also give you some time to guage your interest in the subject and the depth you want on the subject (I personally find trainings, too shallow and narrow on content and very expensive)
